Message
from the Vice-Commodore: this weekend proved to have good, steady
winds that were running at 9 mph or more. We were able to get in one sausage
and one triangle. That is not to say that the wind did not play games
during the day, as the surprise move from Mother Nature came in the form
of a 180 degree wind shift in the middle of the first race! Yup, you read
that right, the racers were flying kites from the windward mark to the
leeward mark, and then flew them BACK to the finish! It was a very strange
sight from the Committee Boat to see a whole fleet coming towards us with
full spinnakers, and having the wind at the Committee Boat coming from
behind us heading directly at those same boats! The lead boat and the
wind change arrived at the finish line at almost the same time, with Good
To Go taking about 2 minutes to cover the last 30 feet or so.
The second race did yield the biggest winds of the day, with a few minutes
of up to and over 16 mph, as measured by the Committee Boat weather station.
All in all, another good day of sailing and coping with Mother Nature
on Clear Lake. A hearty Thank You to all participants! Race results are
on the Racing Page.
The Konocti Bay Sailing Club is located on the
Southwestern shore of Clearlake in Northern California. The club is active
year round, and hosts full schedule of events on the water from April
through November.
As the largest natural lake in California, Clear
Lake provides ample room for sailing, from day cruising and extended racing,
to overnight stays at anchorages around the over one hundred miles of
shoreline.
The
good weather and wind make sailing a popular activity here, and Clear
Lake is home to a large number of sailing craft.
New members and guests are always welcome. Click on the "Club
Information" or "Contact" buttons to the left for more
information on the club, and how to join and participate.
Most
people are aware of the possibility of an infestation of the lake by the
quagga and zebra mussels. The county is requiring mandatory inspections
of all boats
entering Clear Lake, and that inspection stickers be affixed to all boats.
More information that is important to sailboats launching in Clear Lake
is contained
in the 2010 Konocti Cup information page.
